\n\tIn cooperation with the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre the Goethe-Institut Thailand presents the photo exhibition “The City. Becoming and Decaying” with more over 100 photos taken in cities worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t18 photographers of the German artists agency OSTKREUZ went on a journey to discover the essence of contemporary urban reality. They collected images of urban becoming and decaying from 22 cities worldwide – a hitherto unique long-term photographic project on this subject.
\n\t\t <\/div>\n
\n\t\tWhat we have before us is a portrait of a city that brings together all cities, a city that stretches back before memory and extends beyond our imagination. A city that seems timeless, and yet, at each and every moment, is precisely the city we humans have created. People enable cities to grow and decline. They come and flee, build and destroy, hope and despair, press toward the center and remain on the outskirts, seek community, and stay alone – people who want to fulfill their aspirations. The place they have created for this is called the city. <\/div>\n

\n\t\tOSTKREUZ <\/strong><\/div>\n
\n\t\tOSTKREUZ was founded shortly after the end of the GDR in East Berlin. Today, OSTKREUZ is the most successful agency in Germany which is led by photographers. 18 photographers are part of OSTKREUZ. Nearly every one of them was honoured with national or international prices. In celebration of its 20-year-anniversary OSTKREUZ members conceptualized and realized the exhibition „The City. Becoming and Decaying”, which has been on an international tour since 2010. <\/div>\n

\n\t\tSpecial Lecture “Portrait Photography” by Ute and Werner Mahler<\/strong><\/div>\n
\n\t\tThis presentation will demonstrate examples of the history of photography to give a specific knowledge about the work of great portraiture-photographers. Photographers like Joseph Nicéphore Nièpce, Louis Daguerre, Mathew B. Brady and Julia Margaret Cameron have been very important in the beginning of portrait photography in the middle of the 19th century. With Edward Steichen, Lewis Hine, August Sander and Cartier-Bresson, portraiture was getting more and more important at the beginning of the 20th century. With new techniques and better knowledge about photographs in general, many portrait photographers like Diane Arbus, Pieter Hugo, and Richard Avedon followed the path and established a well-known and famous art in photography.  <\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhat possibilities are there to take a portrait photograph? Can a portrait express something beyond its protagonist? Which positions on the portrait can be found in the history of photography from the beginning of the photographic age until now?<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\tDifferent approaches on how to take a portrait photograph will be tested in practical exercises as well as tasks and the results will be put up for discussion. They will be analyzed both technically and contentwise.<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\tFor the first day (December 7, 2014), workshop participants are kindly asked to bring written deliberations on what could be photographed during the course week. Furthermore, they are asked to bring some own works. From the first day of the workshop, participants have 5 days to take photos.<\/div>\n

\t\tAbout the Photographers <\/strong><\/div>\n

\n\t\t <\/div>\n
\n\t\tUte Mahler: In the fall of 1949, Ute Mahler was born in Berka, Germany. After she finished high school, she made a traineeship at the DEWAG advertising agency in Berlin and later studied photography at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig. Since 1975 she works as a freelancer for international magazines and in advertising. Ute Mahler is one of the co-founders of the German photographic agency OSTKREUZ and since 2000 she is also a professor for photography at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences in the field of communication design. <\/div>\n
\n\t\t <\/div>\n
\n\t\tWerner Mahler<\/strong>: Born in 1950 in Boßdorf, Germany, Werner Mahler started working as an assistant for the photographer Ludwig Schirmer after he graduated from high school. After two years he also studied photography at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig. As a freelance photographer he co-founded the OSTKREUZ agency and is now chief executive officer. On top of that, he has worked as a lecturer for photography at the FAS-Berlin for many years. Werner Mahler lives in Lehnitz near Berlin.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
