After the screening, we will try to accommodate everyone who wishes to join the talk.<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>Bangkok Art and Culture Centre proudly presents <strong>\u201cCinema Diverse: Director&#8217;s Choice 2015\u201d<\/strong>. For the third Cinema Diverse, five international films, selected by five acclaimed Thai directors, will be shown bi-monthly from March 2015 \u2013 February 2016, followed by a talk with the Thai director after each screening.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The fifth screening on Saturday 6 February 2016 is <strong>No (Chile \/ 2012)<\/strong> directed by <strong>Pablo Larra\u00edn<\/strong> and chosen by <strong>Apichatpong Weerasethakul<\/strong>, an acclaimed Thai director of <strong>Cemetery of Splendour<\/strong>, <strong>Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives<\/strong>, <strong>Syndromes and A Century<\/strong> and <strong>Tropical Malady.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>No is a 2012 Chilean drama film. The historical moment the film captures is when advertising tactics came to be widely used in political campaigns. The campaign in question was the historic 1988 plebiscite of the Chilean citizenry over whether the dictator Augusto Pinochet should stay in power for another eight years. At the 85th Academy Awards the film was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film.\n<\/div>\n<div>In 1988, Chilean military dictator Augusto Pinochet, due to international pressure, is forced to call a plebiscite on his presidency. The country will vote YES or NO to Pinochet extending his rule for another eight years. Opposition leaders for the NO persuade a brash young advertising executive, Rene Saavedra (Gael Garcia Bernal), to spearhead their campaign. Against all odds, with scant resources and under scrutiny by the despot\u2018s minions, Saavedra and his team devise an audacious plan to win the election and set Chile free.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThis film makes me realise that we were born to be puppets. Our strings are being pulled by different forces. Even the word \u201cDemocracy\u201d has its own agenda. By the time we grow up and see the strings, we cannot cut them. All we can do is smile as the scripts tell us to.
