\n"Pink Man Story" Exhibition and Book Launch<\/strong> Manit Sriwanichpoom,<\/strong> Thailand’s best-known contemporary photo artist, has a vast and varied body of work, but Pink Man is his greatest hit. Like a fetid bubble risen from the previous decade’s witches brew of greed and aspiration, Pink Man sprang into being just before the Tom Yum Gung economic bust, which erupted in Thailand and spread across the world. The fat Asian man in an executive suite, his archetypal inner truth of nouveau riche vulgarity made manifest with that most ‘tasteless’ of colour, shocking pink, armed with a matching supermarket cart, goes shopping for status and sensation in heaven and in hell, vainly and desperately attempting to fill the eternally empty cart\/heart. As a consumerist and contemporary art icon, as much as an inverted crucifix, Pink Man is the exact antithesis of the peacefully meditating Buddha statues of Old Siam. Yet the current mania for King Kong-sized gold Buddhas in Thai monasteries might actually make Pink Man redundant. Manit Sriwanichpoom,<\/strong> born in 1961, Bangkok, is one of Thailand’s leading photographers, and the best known in the international art world, having exhibited worldwide including in the Centre Pompidou (Paris, 2010), The 6th Asia Pacific Triennial (Australia, 2009), Photoquai (Paris, 2007), Gwangju Biennale (Korea, 2006), the Venice Biennale (2003) and Photo Espana (2001). His works are collected by important museums including in the Maison Europeenne de la Photographie (Paris), the DG Bank (Germany), Asian Art Museum of San Francisco (USA), the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum (Japan), the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery Singapore and well known private collectors. In 2007 he was awarded the Higashikawa Overseas Photographer Prize from Japan and in 2014 the Chevalier des Arts et Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture & Communication. \n‘Pink Man Story’<\/strong> is the compilation of the entire Pink Man series (1997-2018), with never before seen conceptual sketches and thoughts by the artist and provocative texts by art writers and curators. Pink Man himself, performed by the great and imitable Sompong Thawee<\/em>, will make a grand appearance at the book launch and exhibition opening, in his post-death guise of Pink Deva, accompanied by his sexy classical entourage Aunyawan Thongboonrod<\/em> on cello and Thanaporn Sathienwaree<\/em> on violin.
