Using a looper pedal, he layers live cello phrases in real time \u2014 building rhythm, harmony, and melody simultaneously \u2014 to create performances that need no orchestra, no backing track, and no second musician. Students will learn the fundamentals of live looping applied to a bowed string instrument: how to structure a loop, how to enter and exit gracefully, and how to use the technique expressively rather than mechanically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mergenthaler is among the foremost practitioners of cello looping in Europe. He trained at the Musikhochschule K\u00f6ln \u2014 one of Germany&#8217;s leading conservatories \u2014 studying under master cellist Boris Pergamenschikov and the Amadeus String Quartet. His professional career spans decades of international stages: the Lincoln Center in New York, La Scala in Milan, Documenta in Kassel, and the Op\u00e9ra de Marseille, among others. He has performed alongside soprano Julia Migenes with the European Union Youth Orchestra under Claudio Abbado, and was a long-standing member of the acclaimed French neo-expressive ensemble Art Zoyd. Today his &#8220;Cello Loops&#8221; concerts are his primary solo format, performed across Europe and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please register with link below as either a Participant (musicians who will play and receive direct feedback) or an Observer (those who would like to attend and watch).
