The status of photography as art is interpreted and passed on through different art history, social history and cultural history of each country in each region. Liz Wells once states that the tension between the photograph as document and the personal expressivity of art has been at the heart of debates as to the status of photographer as art since 19th and 20th century. There are also debates in definition and conclusion in each context. In Western art, the debates never end but they depart to another territory including Southeast Asia, a sub-region of Asia with most intense cultural diversity. Therefore, there are diverse details of ‘thingness’ in photography that are beyond the common significance of photography as visual communication. ‘things’ in this region can be seen as similarity and difference. Within this region, there are light layers among them interchanging between similarity and difference.

PAUSE, a contemporary photography exhibition, is a part of Photo Bangkok festival 2015 with the support of Bangkok Art Cultural Centre. The artists in the exhibition are Ang Song Nian, Bui Huu Phuoc, Jed Escueta, Kim Hak, May Co Naing, MES 56, Minstrel Kuik Ching Chieh, Naruebes Vadvaree, Nazaruddin Abdul Hamed, Phan Quang, Prateep Suthathongthai, Robert Zhao Renhui, Sophal Neak, Souliya Phoumivong and Yason Banal.

This contemporary photography exhibition, PAUSE, introduces a sketch or a collage of stories and issues of the region through the artists’ critical point of views without any conclusion. All exhibited artworks do not come from single disciplinary. They reflect visions and opinions that are re-contextualizing through photography in various medias in order to open our mind for new realities from our neighborhood.
