“Self-Preservation” the Quest for Sustainable Life

“Self-Preservation” the Quest for Sustainable Life

A part of the exhibition “Chiang Mai Now!”

By Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC)
13.00 – 15.00 hr.

Language: THAI

The fundamental law of nature, self-preservation is an instinct for individual preservation and the desire to lead a sustainable life. Often misinterpreted as self-interest, self preservation on the contrary is a desire for long term preservation of the society and environment and is achieved better in a lasting and peaceful manner by helping preserving others, and meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs. As we became civilized we isolated ourselves from the environment, others and our Multidimensional Self, ignoring the fact that Self in reality is an element of the planet. Self Preservation demands that we respect life itself and forbids sabotage of the planet, environment and the life. Self Preservation is a desire for ecological, economic and political revival, an instinct to preserve our health, mind body and soul, and cultural enhancement not only to survive ourselves but increase in value for future generations.

Paradoxically, Self-Preservation in the contemporary society is obsession with personal desires, wealth, power and Self-Interest. More profoundly we observe the modern day society, the basics of self-preservation seem to be apparently fading off in the 21st century self-engaged society. Call it avarice, ignorance or hypocrisy in the modern Thai society, but the need for a conscious change in attitude has become Self-Evident. Political conflicts jeopardizing the peace and economy, Capitalism depleting the natural resources and wrecking the environment, spawning Go-Green campaigns as mere advertising and marketing strategies, shortage of natural resources leading to escalating demand and Inflation and extinction of endanger species to mention the least.

Considering the need for a conscious and unconsciousness awakening of the Thai society, a compelling discussion is scheduled. The heated debate presided over by the imminent panelists from Bangkok to discuss the need for self-preservation in the modern society, quest for sustainable living and the role of art and religion in attaining a peaceful mind and joyful soul. The debate focuses on how to survive in the modern day chaos and how to live a sustainable life with less impact on the environment. The public discussion welcomes everyone to participate and experience self-realization, because if we don't realize it NOW, then we would be left with a self that is empty, futile and detrimental to the future environment and society.
