Mekong, one of the world’s greatest rivers, is widely respected for its important role as the world’s second highest biodiversity river which provides food and fresh water as well as other benefits for millions of people living in the Mekong river basin. Mekong is also a mother river of many significant civilizations and origin of cultures and traditions of people in China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.

Currently, the Xayaburi hydropower project on the Mekong’s mainstream in northern Laos, fully supported by the Government of Thai and Lao PDR, is in the most progressive stage for its construction on the site.  If Xayaburi dam is accomplished, it would destroy Mekong’s ecology and bring invaluable damage to millions of people. This situation therefore creating the grave concern among people who live their lives along the river.

In order to inform the public in Bangkok on the importance of Mekong River’s ecology system and the strong relationship between Mekong and people whose their lives depend on the free flow of this river. TERRA, in collaboration with Network of the Councils of Mekong Tambon Community Organisation in Thailand’s 7 Northeastern Provinces has initiated the campaign on signing the Giant Catfish Postcard that will petition to Prime Minister of Thailand, urging to cancel the power purchase agreement from Xayaburi dam. To date, 7,500 postcards have been signed.

Co-organisers invite you to join the exhibition on “Save the Mekong, Say NO to Xayaburi Dam” and sign on Mekong Giant Catfish postcard. The event will showcase Mekong information features by TERRA and the photographs from the Xayaburi Dam site by Suthep Kritsanavarin, Wuttinun Jantori and Phairat Sunthonchai from Photo Journ. Also, on 16 September 2012, there will be the discussion on “Xayaburi Dam: Thailand’s Energy, Mekong’s Catastrophe”.
