COMIC, MANGO & CO

Comics and Graphic Novels – A scene which is primarily associated with Asian artists. But even in Germany a comic book culture constituted and still does the expression of a common interest in experimenting with new forms of comics for some time. Elements of painting, graphic design and illustration constantly enlarge the repertoire by their ever expanding interplay of technique and narrative forms.
With the exhibition "Comics, Manga & Co", the Goethe-Institut will present two generations of artists who are substantially involved in the creation of this new German comic culture. The innovative and fresh work of the comic book illustrators aims to create an awareness of this – many unknown- new circles of ambitious German comic artists.
The images in their autobiographical, surrealist, historical or fantastical narratives, comic reportages and literary adaptations are created on a wide variety of surfaces, from computer screens to scratchboards, and are drawn in pencil, ink or charcoal, among others.
The exhibition “Comics, manga & co. The new culture of German comics” and the catalogue, which includes additional texts by Matthias Schneider, aims to provide insight into the diverse world of German comics; further information can also be found on the Goethe-Institut website at www.goethe.de/comics.
