MASKS OF ASIA
To celebrate the 500th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Portugal and Thailand, The “Asia Commemorations 2011 Programme” and the Instituto Camões of the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Orient Foundation through the Embassy of Portugal and the Portuguese Cultural Centre in Bangkok have the honor and pleasure to present the exhibition Masks of Asia
This exhibition will present in Thailand a part of the collection Kwok On, an ethnographic collection of more than 10,000 artifacts of Orient Foundation Museum, in Lisbon. It will provide the audience with a generic vision of Asian masks from eight countries (Japan, China, Thailand, Korea, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Tibet and India), showing the diversity and beauty of these enigmatic objects that represent fantastic animals, divinities and demons in religious rituals and in performances. The fascination of reading a mask crosses the knowledge of mythology, art, history and ethnography.
The exhibition integrates 250 masks of different materials (papier-mâché, paper, textile, wood, skin and brass) suspended on the walls with the information provided in English and Thai.
