Finding Abstraction
The art exhibition of abstract sculpture
Organized by Bangkok Art and Culture Centre
This exhibition was derived from the case study on modern Thai abstract sculptural art by Asst. Prof. Tuksina Pipitkul who has studied works and thoughts of four renowned artists on exhibit, consisting of Chamruang Vichienket, Nontiwat Chantanapalin, Inson Wongsam, and Khemarat Kongsook. The exhibition is a presentation of different creative processes involved, from origin of ideas, study, and discovery of attributes found in abstraction that results in elimination of unnecessary, to interpret emotions into physical forms. The communication in form of abstraction by the artists is thus channeled into a sculptural form that is contemporary reflecting views and backgrounds of each individual.
The sculptures on exhibition display a diverse set of creativity and communicative forms from the artists. Chamruang Vichienket integrates Thai Buddhist art as the base of his modern, minimalist works. Inson Wongsam specializes in reducing utilitarian qualities of materials leaving only aesthetics of shape and essence that are left. Nontiwat Chantanapalin creates art that take on round and saturated forms to reflect state of abundance and perfection of nature. Khemarat Kongsook’s works emulate analysis of shapes through cutting, slashing, opening, ripping, until internal volume of movement and attraction is displayed.
The objective of this exhibition is to show that creation of abstract art is not something out of reach for audience, but actually something very close to his or her life experiences. Through artists’ works, the exhibition is curated with stance of Thai sculptural art that is rooted to individual views and culture. It is a path of evolution, a link, and an exchange of methods and perceptions in Thai abstract art. The exhibition highlights the beginning era of abstract art that influences contemporary art in Thailand today.
