“Il Gardellino”



The Bangkok Symphony Orchestra Foundation in association with the Embassy of Israel in Thailand, Bangkok Art and Culture Centre and B.Grimm present the “BEST OF BAROQUE” performed by the world’s renowned baroque ensemble “IL GARDELLINO” which specializes in music of 16th and 17th centuries. The concert will be held on Sunday September 25th, 2011
at 7 pm., (5th Floor), Auditorium of the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre.


The program will feature baroque masterpieces : Marcello’s Oboe concerto in D minor; A.Vivaldi’s Sinfornia Al santo sepolchro for strings, Concerto“La Notte” for Flute; J.G. Janitsch’s Quartet in G for oboe, violin, viola and basso continuo “O Haupt” and J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No.5 in D Major.

Founded over 20 years ago, the baroque ensemble includes members who are soloists, leaders, and sometimes – even co-founders of famous ensembles such as the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and L’Orchestre des Champs-Elysees . After having performed and been highly raised at many festivals and concert halls in Europe, Il Gardellino has been recently enjoying ever increasing success in the USA, Israel, South America, and Japan. Many CDs have been released on the Accent, Klara and Passacaille labels.

For Bangkok’s performance-the ensemble‘s members include Shalev-Ad El (Israeli-Harpsichord),Ira Givol, (Israeli-Cello), Jan De Winne (Belgian-Flute), Marcel Ponseele (Belgian-Oboe), Ryo Terakado (Japanese-violin), Mika Akiha (Japanese-viola), and Sophie Gent (Australian-violin).

This evening will present a unique concert and a rare opportunity for music lovers to hear the best known baroque masterpieces performed by world class artists playing authentic baroque styles.

SHALEV-AD EL (Harpsichord)
Graduated from the Royal Conservatory. Shalev has played as a soloist with most of the leading orchestras in Israel, including the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra.
He is a regular guest as a conductor and soloist on some of the world's most prestigious stages such as Prague Spring, Brugge Festival, Gewandhaus, Berlin Concert hall, Israel Festival, Suntory Hall and Opera City of Tokyo, Sydney Chamber Music Festival, London's Wigmore Hall, Leipzig Bachfest, and others. From 1997 to 2007 he was a regular guest conductor at the Philharmonic Orchestra of Halle/Saale, Germany. His guest conducting was included, among others Berlin Symphony, Bogota Symphony and Sydney Festival Orchestra.

IRA GIVOL (Cello)
Graduated from the Musikhochschule Köln, where he continues his Baroque Cello and Viola Da Gamba studies with Rainer Zipperling, Ira has performed as a soloist with Israel’s leading orchestras including The Israel Symphony Orchestra, The Thelma-Yellin Orchestra and The Israel Conservatory Orchestra. As a founding member of the Tel Aviv Trio, he has won first prize at several prestigious international chamber music competitions in Melbourne, Florence, Germany and Israel.
He has played in most of the world's prestigious concert halls including the Philharmonie in Berlin, the Auditorium du Louvre in Paris, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and more. As a soloist Ira was a prize winner of the Ben-Haim Competition, The Israel Conservatory of Music Competition and the Concerto Barocko competition in Germany. Ira was invited to the International Interlochen Festival where he was awarded a special chamber-music prize.

JAN DE WINNE (flute,traverso) Graduated from the conservatories of Gent (Belgium) and Brussels, Jan de Winne has been a member of the Collegium Vocale and the Orchestre des Champs-Elysées for more than 15 years before turning to a career as soloist and chamber musician. He made several recordings for the Eufoda, Naxos, Unacorda and Accent labels. He also teaches traverso and chamber music at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et Dance of Paris and the Royal Conservatory of Brussels.

MARCEL PONSEELE (Oboe) Graduated from the conservatories of Bruges, Brussels and Gent in Belgium. Marcel also specializes in the baroque oboe and was a prize winner at the "Musica Antiqua" competition in Bruges, he is an active member of several baroque orchestras such as La Petite Bande, The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, and the Chapelle Royale. He is also a founding member of the Orchestra des Champs-Elysées and Il Gardellino, of which he is the artistic leader.
Marcel Ponseele is internationally known as baroque specialist, and is often invited as a soloist to perform with great orchestras and to participate in different recordings.

RYO TERAKADO (violin) Ryo graduated in violin, chamber music and conducting at the Toho Gakuen School of Music. He was a prize winner in the All-Japan Music Competition. At the time, when he graduated from Toho Gakuen, he was invited as a concertmaster for The Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. He later studied the baroque violin at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. Since 1987, Ryo has played with many baroque orchestras in Europe and Japan as a concertmaster. Presently he is the concertmaster of La Petite Bande and Bach Collegium Japan. Ryo was cofounder of the Tokyo Baroque and string quartet Mito dell’Arco. As member of the ensemble Il Gardellino, he made several solo recordings with the ensemble for the Accent label.
He is invited often asked to teach at the Paris Conservatory, the Hague Royal Conservatory and the Toho Gakuen Music School in Japan.

MIKA AKIHA (Violin, Viola) Mika graduated from Toho Gakuen High School, the College of Music in Tokyo, and studied baroque at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels.
She has given concerts in Europe, the USA and Japan with Early Music groups such as Les Agremens, Il Gardellino, La Petite Bande, Il Fondamento, Le Concert Lorrain, Pygmalion, Ricercar consort, and Bach Collegium Japan, and others. She made many recordings for labels such as ACCENT, BIS, RICERCAR, Avex Classics, Challenge, ALM records, DENON et Mirare, etc.

SOPHIE GENT (violin)
Graduated with a master’s degree from the Royal Conservatorium in The Hague. Sophie won first prizes in the International Van Wassenaer Competition (The Netherlands) and the International Premio Bonporti Concours (Italy). Sophie is active as a soloist and chamber musician; performing, touring and recording with numerous leading ensembles of early music and has performed in many of the major early music series and festivals in Europe and abroad such as the Boston Early Music Festival, Montreal Baroque and the Edinburgh Festival. She also appeared as a leader with Ensemble Masques, Les Muffatti, Capriccio Stravagante, Il Complesso Barocco and more. Sophie is a permanent member of Il Gardellino and the period instrument string quartet
Mito Dell'Arco (Japan) and The Retrospect (UK).
Sophie was invited to teach master classes at the University of Western Australia, teaching baroque violin teachers at the Jerusalem Early Music Workshop (2007), and coaching chamber music at the Early Music Department for the Conservatorium in Antwerp.
