Cinema Diverse 2016: The Female Perspective (The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu)
Time: 16.00 – 20.30 hrs.
“The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu is a film constructed solely on archival footage, and yet it reaches beyond the realm of documentary. It’s a film about “image”, in every sense of the word. This cinematic masterpiece should resonate with the people in Thailand.” Anocha Suwichakornpong
The fourth and final screening of CINEMA DIVERSE: DIRECTOR’S CHOICE 2016 The Female Perspective on Saturday 19 November 2016 is a Romanian film, “The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu” (2010) directed by Andrei Ujicaand chosen by Anocha Suwichakornpong, an acclaimed Thai female director of “Mundane History” and “By the Time It Gets Dark”.
“The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu” caps a twenty-year quest to forge a new kind of non-fiction cinema – part historical chronicle, part essayistic reflection – using archival footage from Romania and the Soviet Union to trace the collapse of state Communism in those countries.
During the summary trial that he and his wife were submitted to, Nicolae Ceausescu is reviewing his long reign in power: 1965-1989.From a formal point of view, “The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu” proves that it is possible to only use existing images to yield films focused on recent history, yet with an epic vein similar to that of the historical fiction cinema. This is an eminently syntactic endeavour, where montage plays a twofold part: mise-en-scene, as it builds scenes that do not exist as such in the rushes, and classical editing, connecting scenes together.
Join us for the screening of “The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu” and the post-screening talk with Andrei Ujica and Anocha Suwichakornpong.
