PERFORMANCE ART WORKSHOP: Exploring presence In traditional theatre, we tend to admire what we call an actor's "presence, a kind of charisma of the performer that commands the audience's attention. Most performance art, however, is not concerned with the performer's ability to project an engaging persona. Often, performance artists want to draw the audience's attention to other qualities: to particular details of a space, to the relationships we find ourselves in, to the situation at hand, to what is happening in the live moment. How can we open up an audience's perceptions to the actions taking place? Rather than act a role, how do we make an action?
This workshop explores how we can open up an audience's awareness to the intra-active relationships of self, world, and others. Over three days, participants will be led through specific exercises/experiences and be given an opportunity to develop performance actions. We will look at various approaches to performing-from barely perceptible insertions into the everyday to gestures that actively seek to cirect an aucience's attention in specific ways (e.g. look at me vs. look at what I am doing; making the world familiar vs. making the world strange; manipulating objects vs. animating a space; being watched vs. interacting, etc.).
