“Beyond the Berlin Wall”
By Co-organised by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bangkok and the Creative Cultural City (CCC) Research Group of Silpakorn University
2019 marks 30 years of the fall of the Berlin Wall, which lead to the reunification of Germany in 1990. The Berlin Wall was the finishing piece in a border that prevented citizens in East Germany from leaving their country. Many wanted to leave since the German Democratic Republic – the socialist state in the Eastern part of today’s Germany – oppressed dissent and limited personal freedom. Socialist rule collapsed in 1989 when the people overcame the fear of state suppression and peacefully demanded freedom in ever bigger demonstrations. Remarkably, not a single drop of blood was shed in the peaceful revolution that transformed dictatorship into democracy.
To commemorate this historic event and to create an understanding of the recent history of Germany in a creative and engaging way, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bangkok and the Creative Cultural City (CCC) Research Group of Silpakorn University invited 20 young artists from Silpakorn University to participate in the art project “Beyond the Berlin Wall”. Inspired by the original parts of the Berlin Wall situated at the German Embassy Bangkok and engaging with the subject of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the artists have created artworks on canvas and wall miniatures centering on the subject of achieving freedom by overcoming fear .
