CROSSOVER II: The Nature of Relationships

Organised by Bangkok Art and Culture Centre
In collaboration with Thai Art Collector Association (TACA)

Curated by Suebsang Sangwachirapiban

From the success of Crossover: The Unveiled Collection in 2005, the first exhibition in which Bangkok Art and Culture Centre presented a collection of Thai artworks by Thai and foreign collectors. The show had a significant impact and generated awareness of the importance of art collecting in the Thai art ecosystem, which is vital in propelling the Thai art industry.

In 2022, the BACC proudly presents " CROSSOVER II: The Nature of Relationships" in collaboration with the Thai Art Collector Association (TACA). The exhibition aims to build continuity on similar subjects and emphasises the importance of art collection by Thai collectors. Presenting modern Thai artworks with environmental motifs depicts social issues and the environment in each era through collections of public and private organisations and Thai individual collectors. Furthermore, the exhibition explored the myths surrounding the artworks, the artists' perspectives on the tangible and ethereal spatial surroundings, and the relationships between the artists and surrounded context.

This exhibition discusses a triangle of relationships between Art – Artist – Environment through the research of Thai modern art in a transitional period – from 1945, at the end of World War II, to 2000, the year of the Tom Yum Kung financial crisis (before Thailand entered the state of the contemporary phenomena). All works in the exhibition represent the relationship between the three elements mentioned above.

CROSSOVER II: The Nature of Relationships is curated and presented artworks in the art collection of organisations and private collections that connects with an environmental issue, urban, challenging situations, impression in various angles during different periods of Thai history. With more than 70 works, the exhibition is categorised these visual phenomena into six distinct groups: Scenery, Site of Beliefs, A Part of Mind, Surrealism, The Nature in Abstraction, and Social Criticism.
