“What is Jazz? Is playing a wrong note considered Jazz?”
For a novice jazz listener, jazz music may seem like an abstract painting—puzzling and hard to understand. Jazz music has its own characteristics and a unique culture. Musically, it is complex and ever-evolving. Therefore, this activity is held to answer these questions, providing an introductory dialogue on the brief history of jazz, different types of jazz music, and basic tips on how to enjoy listening to jazz.
Meet Dr. Denny Euprasert—jazz pianist, composer, conductor, professor, and executive; Dean of the Rangsit University Conservatory of Music; and winner of the Silpatorn National Award for Performing Artists (2009). Also joining us are Chanutr Techatananan—jazz drummer known for his innovativeness and groovy swings, and Deputy Dean for Academic Services and International Affairs at the Faculty of Music, Silpakorn University; Noppadol Tirataradol—Associate Dean for Professional Services and Lecturer at the College of Music, Mahidol University, jazz double bassist, project manager of the Thailand International Jazz Conference (TIJC), and General Manager of the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra; and lastly, Attapon Manjaroen, or Kru Gap—Yamaha Music Business Director, vocal instructor, vocal trainer, composer, and recording artist.
This activity is a part of the Music Appreciation Program—a series of talks and listening sessions designed to ignite interest, create knowledge, and enhance understanding of various music aspects. The program covers diverse music types, including songwriting, orchestration, jazz, and classical genres. Each session comprises a talk followed by listening, aiming to improve music appreciation skills and understanding of non-mainstream music's vital role in everyday life. The program seeks to enable the audience to deepen their understanding of musical aesthetics.
