Tiger’s Waltz: A Cold Dance of Waltz
By Sarankon Payungwataseth
Delve yourself into a world where humans coexist with spirits; one where your thoughts don’t belong to yourself and you may subconsciously be controlled by an unwavering force like a puppet.
Tiger’s Waltz: A Cold Dance with Death explores a world revolving around people’s mental health portrayed in the form of Yokai (Japanese spirits) and many other interesting creatures. These spirits feed on people’s motivations, ambitions, will and energy to their very last drop by playing around and manipulating their unsuspecting hosts. As for what comes afterwards, it is all taken away and it doesn’t always end well.
Greatly inspired by Japanese culture and its arts, this project takes inspiration from myths, stories, culture and art style. A blend of anime and manga-esque storytelling is used to portray different people’s experiences with mental health as well as to raise awareness of its importance as people tend to brush it off – unaware it will come back to bite them, leaving a scar that isn’t so easy to brush off anymore.
This exhibition is a year-long academic project that the artist used for the study of film and animations. Much of the work showcased is ongoing and meant to show the background of what goes into the development of indie animation, story writing and world-building. The artist studied film analysis to pay attention to how stories can be portrayed through mise-en-scene, a French term for what is put into a scene or frame and how these visual/auditory elements contribute to the emotional impact of a film (e.g. lighting and colour). This allowed him to establish a theme and style for the animation which led to the creation of the world and story showcased in this exhibition.
