BACC Circle 2024: In conversation with Akiko Miki and Sanitas Pradittasnee – On Revitalising Islands: Benesse Art Site Naoshima

By Bangkok Art and Culture Centre
Registration: 14:30 hrs.
Session starts at: 15:00 – 16:30 hrs.

Following last year’s 15th anniversary project of the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC) – BACC Circle, the panel discussion for cultural management professionals and enthusiasts. This year, we return with BACC Circle 2024, focusing on the topic of international public art and cultural management. The event aims to foster systematic policy development to establish a sustainable foundation for the Thai art ecosystem.

This event will feature a discussion On Revitalising Islands: Benesse Art Site Naoshima. Akiko Miki will be joining us to share her insight on the transformation of remote islands suffering from depopulation and environmental problems caused by rapid modernisation and urbanisation in the Seto Inland Sea.
Akiko Miki is currently the International Artistic Director of Benesse Art Site Naoshima and has previously served as the Chief and Senior Curator of the Palais de Tokyo. She was also the Co-Director of the Yokohama Triennale 2017 and has collaborated as a guest curator with prestigious institutions such as the Mori Art Museum, Yokohama Museum of Art, Barbican Art Gallery, and the National Museum of Contemporary Art in South Korea. Additionally, Sanitas Pradittasnee, a landscape architect, artist, and founder of Sanitas Studio, will join the discussion. Sanitas’s oeuvre features art, installations, and landscape architecture, including Khao Mo (Mythical Escapism) exhibited at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre in the 2013 exhibition Resort: An Exhibition for Landscape of Rest, and her installation at Rai Chern Tawan as part of the Thailand Biennale Chiang Rai in 2023, among many others. With the background in landscape architecture, fine arts, and an interest in sculptural space, she personally travels to Japan in order to study the unique architectural identity of Benesse Art Site Naoshima and the coexistence between an art community, architecture, and nature, and that she will be sharing her experience with us.

With their extensive experience in the art world, both will discuss the principles that have led to the success of Benesse Art Site Naoshima—Akiko from the creator’s perspective and Sanitas from an objective architectural viewpoint, from site-specific development concerning the local community and nature to management and involvement of government agencies, making Benesse Art Site Naoshima a key destination for art lovers worldwide to this day.

BACC hopes that the BACC Circle initiative will spark meaningful conversations on cultural policy and connect art leaders and enthusiasts to promote a thriving and sustainable art ecosystem in Thailand.
