Speedy Grandma: The Spirits and the Collective Practice

Speedy Grandma: The Spirits and the Collective Practice is a public program in the form of an exhibition talk under LOCAL MYTHS: The Intrinsic Aesthetic. Speedy Grandma is a collective-cum-community of artists, curators, and practitioners loosely bound by a shared commitment to the seriousness of play. Youthful in spirit and irreverent in tone, the collective began as an art gallery but never stayed confined to that form—embracing experimentation and welcoming those bold enough to dive headlong into their creative practices. Over more than a decade, it has evolved from a physical space into a cross-disciplinary collective, moving with the world and engaging in dialogues beyond the boundaries of art itself.

This talk revisits Speedy Grandma’s inspirations, origins, and transformations—reflecting on collective processes that resist easy definitions, and on the potential for art-making as solidarity and survival in times of crisis. It opens conversations on contemporary myths, both as local narratives and as tools for critiquing power structures, discourses, and imagining new possibilities. It also invites audiences to consider how beauty and seriousness might emerge from playfulness and imperfection, and how collective practice can shape the Thai art scene today.
