Workshop ‘Living Fibers’ Materialism – Exploring the Art of Paper Conservation is part of the International Symposium: The Art of Holding Time: A Conservation Dialogue on Materials and Environment, organised by the Education Department of the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre in collaboration with SAC Conservation Lab. This intensive two-day masterclass offers participants an immersive learning experience on materials in contemporary art and art conservation, focusing on paper as a material of cultural, historical, and artistic significance. The program includes lectures, hands-on experiments, group discussions, and a field trip to the traditional paper-making community of Kra Dad Ban Khoi in Nakhon Sawan province, where participants will observe the complete production process with local artisans—from raw material preparation to creating their own artwork on handmade paper.
The workshop also provides a rare opportunity to learn preventive conservation practices with Sopit Panyakhan, an expert conservator from the Fine Arts Department, focusing on understanding paper properties, selecting safe materials, and managing environmental conditions for preservation. Materialism is an invaluable opportunity for anyone interested in the conservation of artworks on paper to gain both academic knowledge and real-world experience, along with practical skills applicable to preserving the value and stories of artworks for generations to come.
Limited to 20 participants only. Eligible participants are individuals with an interest in conservation, as well as conservators, artists, curators, and arts managers. Applicants must be able to attend the workshop on both days and communicate in Thai. There are no restrictions on age or educational background. Please submit a short bio and a statement of interest explaining your motivation to join the workshop, saved as a PDF file.
