WHAT IS MAB?

The Media Architecture Biennale (MAB) is the world’s premier event on media architecture, urban interaction design, and urban informatics. It brings together architects, artists and designers, leading thinkers on urban design, key industry and government representatives as well as community activists. Together, they explore the design and role of media in the built environment and its implications for urban communities and ecosystems. The objectives of MAB are;

  • Organize conferences to present academic work and research on digital media within the Media Architecture area, aimed at advancing knowledge in the development of spaces, buildings, architectural projects, and urban development.
  • Create a platform for exchanging and connecting specialized knowledge in digital media within the Media Architecture area for creators, educational institutions, and government agencies.
  • Encourage the creation of new ideas and works by using digital media as a tool for storytelling and generating positive impacts on architectural projects and urban development.
  • Build potential collaboration between organizations and agencies across the educational sector, private sector, and government to create new models for urban development.
  • Promote activities that enhance the vibrancy of the city, positively impacting tourism and the city’s image.

Previous MABs have been held in Toronto (2023), Amsterdam/Utrecht (2020), Beijing (2018), Sydney (2016), Aarhus (2014, 2012), Vienna (2010), Berlin (2008), and London (2007).

Media Architecture Biennale 2025 in Bangkok
will be the first city in Southeast Asia to host the Media Architecture Biennale.

THEME
‘Urban Dialogue; transformative Living Phenomena’
Urban development in the 21st century is no longer defined solely by infrastructure expansion or conventional planning models. The dynamic changes driven by population growth have led cities to expand without boundaries, reflecting the increasing complexity and diversity that all urban environments must confront.

People seek spaces that respond to their needs, express their identities, and share narratives that connect with their communities and ways of life. As such, the ‘city’ plays a vital role as a space for participation, exchange of ideas, and dialogue— becoming a platform for interaction that integrates knowledge, design, data, and media technologies to reflect the evolving relationship between humans, the urban environment, and technology.

The main theme includes 3 sub-themes;
1) Vibrant Culture with Media Architecture
(Community Scale)
Exploration the role and potential of media architecture in enriching cultural life at the community scale. Support identity expression and highlight the ethnic and cultural diversity in contemporary urban contexts.

2) New Media Paradigms, Reshaping the Cities
(City Scale)
Transformation at the city scale. Highlighting the use of network communication and information technologies —such as Big Data, AI, IoT, XR and intelligent information systems—as key drivers in designing and organizing urban systems.

3) Urban Future & Transhuman Citizens
(Global Scale)
Creation of future cities goes beyond physical boundaries. The world that blends the physical and virtual realities to support new ways of living, engaging in activities, and shaping environments for the urban futures to come.
