ONE BOW INFINITE LOOPS (A Cello Masterclass with André Mergenthaler)

Join us for a special masterclass with Luxembourg artist André Mergenthaler on Wednesday, 10 June 2026, at the Friends of BACC Room at the Bangkok Art and Cultural Center (BACC).

In this masterclass, cellist André Mergenthaler demonstrates how a single instrument can become an entire ensemble. Using a looper pedal, he layers live cello phrases in real time — building rhythm, harmony, and melody simultaneously — to create performances that need no orchestra, no backing track, and no second musician. Students will learn the fundamentals of live looping applied to a bowed string instrument: how to structure a loop, how to enter and exit gracefully, and how to use the technique expressively rather than mechanically.

Mergenthaler is among the foremost practitioners of cello looping in Europe. He trained at the Musikhochschule Köln — one of Germany’s leading conservatories — studying under master cellist Boris Pergamenschikov and the Amadeus String Quartet. His professional career spans decades of international stages: the Lincoln Center in New York, La Scala in Milan, Documenta in Kassel, and the Opéra de Marseille, among others. He has performed alongside soprano Julia Migenes with the European Union Youth Orchestra under Claudio Abbado, and was a long-standing member of the acclaimed French neo-expressive ensemble Art Zoyd. Today his “Cello Loops” concerts are his primary solo format, performed across Europe and beyond.
