Speculative Chula: Not Yet Built

Speculative Chula: Not Yet Built

Sam Yan is a neighborhood that has been written over, again and again. Its markets, shrines, shophouses, and diasporic communities were gradually replaced by high-rises, malls, and the language of the “smart city.” Yet beneath a master plan that declares itself already finished, another future persists, one that was foreclosed before it could arrive.

This exhibition gathers the work of a ten-week design research sprint between students from Harvard GSD and architecture and design students across Thailand. Five speculative future scenarios sit alongside essays by invited scholars and the voices of shrine caretakers, vendors, and those who refuse to disappear.

The future of this place has not been decided. That means it can still be argued over, imagined, and shaped together. The exhibition begins there, and now, you are part of that conversation.
