A laboratory for cultivating curiosity, toward a learning city

Bangkok City Lab invites city dwellers to explore two simple questions

• In a large and complex urban society, how might we cultivate civic participation among urban dwellers whose available time does not coincide?

• How might the city create opportunities to gather, generate, and build upon people’s ideas and opinions, forming a foundation for collaborative urban development?

The exhibition presents processes and experimental tools developed through this spatial inquiry — showcasing participatory methods alongside prototype installations designed to embed within public space (Open Access Learning Space). Together, they aim to ignite curiosity and invite people to observe and explore the city’s stories at their own pace: oral history, built environments, ways of life, liberation and suppression, and collective memory.

The project was carried out with RTUS-Bangkok, studying the Trok Salak Hin community and its surroundings in Hua Lamphong, Pathumwan District, as a sandbox for the idea of “Asynchronous Participation.” By gathering public input — stories, facts, and memories residents hold of their own neighbourhood — the project builds both a deeper local understanding and a learning experience for visitors getting to know the area.

Bangkok City Lab invites visitors to consider: if learning can happen anywhere, anytime, how might the city design and invest in flexible learning infrastructure across its lanes, streets, alleys, and smaller neighbourhoods?
