RE-MAPPING TRADITION IN THAILAND AND SOUTHEAST ASIA

Re-mapping Tradition in Thailand and Southeast Asia explores traditional dance as “Embodied Knowledge”—knowledge accumulated, practised, and transmitted through the body, from teacher to student. Building on No.60, developed by Pichet Klunchun, the project researches nine forms of dance across Southeast Asia through field research, movement analysis, and Movement Diagramming. In Phase 1, supported by the Department of Cultural Promotion, Ministry of Culture, Thailand, the project works with artists and scholars from nine countries to document movement, practice, and cultural context. Rather than simply preserving existing forms, the project seeks to “re-map the cultural landscape of dance” in order to create a repository of wisdom and knowledge, as well as the relationships and diversity embodied in the region’s dance practices. It also establishes a knowledge foundation for the generation of new intellectual possibilities, education, research, contemporary creation, and new forms of performing arts creation.
