Chiang Rai International Performance Art Project 2026: River Resistance
Rivers are not merely natural resources; they are living systems that sustain ecosystems, livelihoods, cultures, memories, and communities. Today, rivers across Southeast Asia face increasing pressures from mining, dam construction, infrastructure development, pollution, intensive resource extraction, and climate change. These transformations affect not only the environment, but also the rights, livelihoods, and futures of communities whose lives are deeply connected to rivers. Chiang Rai International Performance Art Project 2026: River Resistance brings together art, ecology, human rights, and community experiences within the public sphere, focusing on the interconnected river systems of the Kok, Sai, Ruak, Mekong, and Salween Rivers. The exhibition presents photography, film, documentary, painting, mixed media, and archival materials emerging from artistic processes and engagement with local communities. These works are approached as forms of testimony, memory, and lived experience. Performance art forms a central element of the project, using the body, time, place, sound, and participation to open new ways of questioning the relationship between humans and the environment. Talks, workshops, and open performance activities further connect artists, researchers, activists, students, communities, and the public. The project seeks to create a space for encounter, listening, and exchange across borders, connecting local experiences with regional and international dialogues, while understanding the river as a living entity, a shared memory, a space of relationships, and a site for imagining-possible-futures.
