Forum “Preparing for the Heat Tsunami”

By Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, Marine Science Association of Thailand and For Sea Foundation
Time: 13.00 – 17.00 hrs.

Global warming is causing sea temperatures to rise steadily, directly affecting coastal ecosystems, coral reefs, marine resources, and the livelihoods of coastal communities. These impacts will also extend to tourism and every sector of the economy. At the same time, the El Niño cycle has led many to expect a “Super El Niño” in the near future. We compare this phenomenon to a “heat tsunami” that will grow increasingly severe unless we begin preparing for it today.

The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, together with the Marine Science Association of Thailand and For Sea Foundation, is therefore organizing a public forum titled “Preparing for the Heat Tsunami.” Its main purpose is to bring all sectors—including government, the private sector, and the general public—together to find answers and prepare for the impacts ahead. Crucially, the forum aims to raise widespread awareness before a crisis or disaster occurs.

Academics, government agencies, the private sector, and civil society will take part in the forum on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the multipurpose room on the first floor of the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, Pathum Wan District. The event will be opened by Dr. Pinsak Suraswadi, Director-General of the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources. Marine and climate specialists Dr. Somkiat Khokeatiwong, Dr. Anond Snidvongs na Ayudhya, Assistant Professor Dr. Thon Thamrongnawasawat, Professor Sak Anan Plathong, and Dr. Lalita Patchim will also present on the current situation.
