Trait d’Union – Thailand and France, form daily life to lasting ties

A photo exhibition celebrating 170 years of Thailand–France diplomatic relations

When a French delegation first traveled to the royal court of Ayutthaya during the reign of King Narai, no one could have imagined it would be the start of a friendship that lasts to this day. Over 170 years, Thailand and France have grown together through trade, education, art, and culture — building a relationship that goes deeper than most people realize.

In French, “Trait d’Union” means hyphen — the small dash that joins two words into one. A small mark that seems insignificant, yet is impossible to do without, because it is what holds everything together. That’s what this exhibition is about. The connection between Thailand and France isn’t something that only lives in history books. It shows up in everyday life, in places and moments we might never have thought to look.

Every photo here was taken by an ordinary person who noticed that connection and wanted to share it. No rules, no perfect angle — just something they felt was worth showing.

If you want to see how two countries so far apart have stayed so close, we’d love for you to come and find out at Trait d’Union.
